Bob Shabek Ali Karim Daniel is also coming out of Disney soon

Now that Bob Iger is back at Disney, Suite C is in the process of being overhauled. On Monday, Iger announced in an internal memo that Karim Daniel will be stepping down as president of Disney Media and Entertainment Distribution. As a senior aide to Bob Chapek at the helm of support, Daniel oversaw the distribution and release of all Disney projects. In his role, Daniel eventually became the deciding factor in whether the films were given theatrical or streaming vacation.

“I have asked Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, Jimmy Pittaro, and Christine McCarthy to work together on designing a new structure that puts more decision-making in the hands of our creative teams and justifies costs, and that will require a reorganization of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution. As a result, Karim Daniel will be leaving the company. And I hope you will all join me in thanking him for his many years of service to Disney,” Iger wrote in his note.

He added, “Our goal is to have the new structure in place in the coming months. Without a doubt, the elements of DMED will remain, but I think fundamentally storytelling is what fuels this company, and it’s part of how we organize our business.”

Daniel’s departure is likely the first of many as the company restructures amid impending layoffs. Earlier this month, Chapek circulated a memo that put a slew of layoffs on the table as the company looked to improve its bottom line.

“We conducted a rigorous review of the company’s content and marketing spend working with content leaders and their teams,” Chapek’s memo reads in part. “While we will not sacrifice quality or the power of our unparalleled synergy machine, we must ensure that our investments are effective and bring tangible benefits to both the public and the company. Second, we are limiting headcount additions through a targeted hiring freeze. For the small subset Of the more critical, business-oriented positions, it will continue, but all other roles are pending. Sector leaders and HR teams have more specifics on how this applies to your teams.”
